Sheet music edition: Mikis Theodorakis - Songs for Piano Vol. 1, published by Schott Music
The Petrushka Project is an unprecedented international live concert and commissioning initiative presented by Schott Music, boasting premieres of 75 solo piano pieces by a wide range of composers around the world. The Project affords a rare and unique opportunity for the infusion of a huge variety of new piano works into the international repertoire. Composers from 26 countries took part in Petrushka Project 2012, and the Project will be continued in the coming years.
Mikis Theodorakis composed this famous Sirtaki melody in 1964. The pianist Tatiana Papageorgiou has now produced a pianistically challenging arrangement for piano solo in collaboration with the composer.
We are familiar with the Sirtaki with its slow initial steps accelerating progressively in the dance which was popularised by the film Alexis Zorbas starring Anthony Quinn and Alan Bates who performed this dance to the music of Mikis Theodorakis. The name Sirtaki originates from the Syrtos (dragging dance), a highly varied traditional Greek folk dance. Atypically for Greek dances, the Sirtaki is not danced in a circle, but standing in a row with the arms placed over the neighbouring dancers’ shoulders.
