This song is one of my all-time favorites. Its message is about how bigotry and prejudice are instilled in us by the people closest to us. None of us are born with intolerance for folks of a different race, religion or lifestyle. It's something that we are taught. The song is from a Rodgers and Hammerstein musical from 1949 called "South Pacific" and it caused a bit of a stir back then. There were people who actually thought that the song promoted communist values. It's funny, but it seems like those same kinds of people are going around today labeling everything that promotes a more inclusive society as communistic. I guess the old saying is true: the more things change, the more they stay the same. In any case, this is one of my favorite jazz guitarists/singers on the scene today, John Pizzarelli, doing the honors on both guitar and vocal. As usual for him, this is great stuff.
