This song grew in ways none of us in the band could have imagined. It started with a “group writing” exercise. We loved the idea of a baby bird in a nest, unsure if her little wings would catch her if she leapt. By the end of writing the song, we all felt such a kinship to this little bird, almost proud in a way. The drums for this session were recorded remotely while Mike (Shimmin) was in Michigan under the careful mics of Ian Gorman, On our side, we were driving through the mountains of Idaho. Also, big thanks to Frank (Marchand) on this one for letting us record about 700 layers of vocals at the end! - David Howley

It was a warm summer’s morning when we all came together at David’s house in New Quay to rehearse for the album. I’m not sure who suggested that we should try writing a song together from scratch, as it wasn’t something we had done before. That morning, whilst drinking coffee on my patio, I had noticed three fledgling birds practicing flying up and down from a tree to the patio. It struck me that they weren’t concerned about who came first or last in their efforts, and I remember being inspired by the freedom in that thought. When I shared the story with the lads, it sparked the idea for a song about learning to fly, and over the course of the next few hours we crafted the lyrics and melody to this song.
