WE ARE THE WORLD - Wie entstand das Lied?
Nachdem der irische Musiker Bob Geldorf mit dem britischen All-Star-Benefiz-Projekt
"BAND AID" und dem Titel "DO THEY KNOW IT's CHRISTMAS" im Dezember 1984 vorgelegt hatte, schwebte dem amerikanischen Sänger Harry Belafonte eine ähnliche Aktion auch für die USA vor. Er kontaktierte den TV-Produzenten Ken Kragen, der durch sein hervorragendes Netzwerk im Musikbusiness schnell eine illustre und bunte Liste an Stars zusammenstellte.

Beauftragt wurden Lionel Richie und Michael Jackson, die sich eine ganze Woche im Anwesen des KING OF POP wegschlossen und mit WE ARE THE WORLD wieder rauskamen.

Wie kamen die Stars zusammen?
Am Abend der American Music Awards, der zufällig auch noch von Lionel Richie moderiert wurde, war die Creme de la Creme der US-Stars in Los Angeles. Nach der Gala gab es keine Party, sondern eine Nachtschicht im Studio. Wie sich so unterschiedliche Charaktere und Stimmen von Bob Dylan, über Tina Turner, Huey Lewis bis zu Steve Perry, Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder oder Kenny Rogers unter der Leitung des legendären Musikproduzenten Quincy Jones und Lionel Richie zusammenrauften und diese Hymne in nur einer Nacht aufnahmen, ist wohl bis heute beispiellos.
Um 8.00 Uhr morgens war WE ARE THE WORLD fertig aufgenommen und wurde Anfang März veröffentlicht. Am 5. April 1985 wurde dieses Lied dann von 5000 Radiostationen weltweit gleichzeitig gespielt. Der Song stand wenig später in fast allen Ländern auf Platz 1 der Charts.
