Description
Old Dogs was an American country music supergroup composed of singers Waylon Jennings, Mel Tillis, Bobby Bare, and Jerry Reed. Signed in 1998 to Atlantic Records, Old Dogs recorded a self-titled studio album for the label that year. The album's content was written primarily by author, poet, and songwriter Shel Silverstein. Most of the group's songs were based on the realization of aging after Bare told Silverstein that there were "no good songs about growing old."
The album was recorded live in studio, so audience applause can be heard between the tracks. The two discs come in different cases and has different album art for them. The album was also issued as a single disc. "Still Gonna Die" was released as a single from the project. The album was one of the last projects Silverstein completed in his lifetime; he died in May 1999, five months after the album was released.
Lyrics
His Picture Was in all the Papers
They Said that a Legend had Passed
The Late Evenin’ News did a Special Report
Swore that his Mem’ry would Last
They’re Playin’ his Records all Weekend
Praisin’ the Life that he Led
Nashville Is Rough On The Living
But She Really Speaks Well of the Dead
The Wife that they Interviewed, Cryin’
Is the Same One who Left him last Fall
And the Record Producer who Called him a Hero
Is the One Who wouldn’t Answer his Call
The Ladies, they Sit over Coffee
Braggin’ ’bout Sharin’ his Bed
They didn’t Want him Around when he’s Livin’
But he’s Sure a Good Friend when he’s Dead
BRIDGE:
They Observed Twenty Seconds of Silence
At the Opry on Saturday Night
And they’re Searchin’ the Bars and the Basements
For Some Souvenir of his Life
They’re Plannin’ a Book for September
Showin’ his Plain Country Roots
And they’re Sellin the Rights to the Movie
And the Hall of Fame’s Gettin’ his Boots
At the Funeral Somebody Recited a Poem
That Told How he Suffered and Bled
Nashville Is Rough On The Living
But She Really Speaks Well of the Dead
YEA!, Nashville Is Rough On The Living
But She Really Speaks Well of the Dead
