A stimulating modern take on nanyin—one of the oldest genres of Chinese music, originating from Fujian—has been specially selected to express VACO’s goal of breaking new ground for a contemporary audience whilst re-engaging with classics.

The Plum Blossoms Story is one of the Four Famous Nanyin Scores. This charming and graceful piece of traditional music employs a succinct musical vocabulary to chart the growth of plum blossoms.

The piece comprises five sections:

1. Biding for Spring in the Snow
2. Smiling in the Breeze
3. Diffusing Fragrance with the Melting Snow
4. Breaking Out of the Calyx
5. The Blossoms in Full Bloom

Scored for a full Chinese ensemble, Law Wai Lun’s arrangement re-imagines this classic piece, traditionally performed only on the nanyin dongxiao, erxian, sanxian and pipa. The result is a multi-layered work which bridges the introspection of traditional Chinese music with a modern, almost Romantic aesthetic. A warm and vibrant painting, it not only presents the beauty of plum blossoms in wind and snow, but encourages one to view them as symbols of unyielding spirit, flourishing in the face of adversity. The work is thus an apt representation of the young orchestra’s passion and determination.

《梅花操》是南音四大名谱之一，全曲共分为五段:

1、酿雪争春
2、临风妍笑
3、点水流香
4、联珠破萼
5、万花竞放

乐曲以古朴简练的音乐语汇，描写了梅花迎风斗雪而傲然盛开的各种形态。著名作曲家罗伟伦先生在1998年把此曲改编成乐队合奏曲，让曲子添加了一层现代感。此曲描绘着一副画，呈现了梅花在寒冷的冬天中绽放的美丽。因此，《梅花操》也鼓励人们在面对困难时的坚韧不拔，代表着像维亚乐团一样的年轻乐团对音乐的热情与毅力。
