Description
I make no secret of the fact that the dynamic, lively and gritty songs performed by Tuba Skinny rally me the most. "Jazz Battle" is one of the most representative examples of this type of recording in their repertoire. In 1928, Jabbo Smith was stuck in Chickago for several years after an aborted tour with James P. Johnson's orchestra. At that time, he entered into a contract with Brunswick Records to record 20 songs. A series of these recordings released in 1929 (19 songs) became the best known of his repertoire. He was even hailed as a rival to Louis Armstrong. Despite this, the records did not sell well and Brunswick Records did not renew Jabbo Smiths contract. Today, performed by Tuba Skinny, his music still sounds fantastic.
