The Amis (also Ami or Pangcah) is the largest indigenous minority group among fourteen officially recognized aboriginal tribes in Taiwan. Most of the Amis people reside in the eastern valleys that lie between the coastal cities of Hualien and Taitung. They speak Amis, an Austronesian language, and their traditional territory include the long, narrow valley between the Central Mountains and the Coastal Mountains, the Pacific coastal plain eastern to the Coastal Mountains, and the Hengchun Peninsula.
