Mystery surrounds the origin of Ataniche. Ponzio said that he had dedicated it to a girlfriend of his called Anita and that the title was an anagram of “Che, Anita” and the manuscript was signed by him in 1900. However, in 1914, Roberto Firpo recorded the tango under the title “Los Guevara” and this was also signed by Firpo. The same tune was released a year later by Celestino Ferrer, on which Firpo also appeared as the composer. By 1924, it had appeared again, this time as “Ataniche” recorded by Juan Carlos Bazán with Firpo listed as the composer. Then Firpo himself recorded it but under the title of “Los Guevara”. A year after Ponzio’s death, it was again recorded by Firpo but, this time, as “Ataniche” and listing Ponzio as the composer.
It is now suggested that Firpo was not the composer but had used the tune, which had appeared in a musical play called “Los Guevara”. The belief is now, and this was confirmed by Ponzio himself, that the composer of the tango was anonymous and that Ponzio was the first to adapt and arrange it as a tango.
