The 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, is the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism and a prominent advocate for peace and human rights. He was born in 1935 in northeastern Tibet and was recognized as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama at the age of two.
In 1959, following the Chinese occupation of Tibet, he fled to India, where he established the Tibetan government in exile, known as the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA). From Dharamsala, India, he has tirelessly worked to preserve Tibetan culture and identity, which face systematic suppression in Tibet. Under his leadership, the CTA has established numerous cultural, educational, health, and religious institutions for the Tibetan refugee community.
The Dalai Lama is a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, receiving the award in 1989 for his non-violent struggle for the liberation of Tibet. He has consistently advocated for a "Middle Way Approach," seeking genuine autonomy for Tibet within China rather than full independence. His efforts have brought significant international attention to the human rights situation in Tibet.
Beyond the Tibetan cause, the Dalai Lama is recognized globally for his messages of compassion, forgiveness, religious harmony, and universal responsibility. He has engaged in dialogues with scientists, religious leaders, and political figures worldwide, promoting interfaith understanding and global peace.
To celebrate His Holiness the Dalai Lama's 90th birthday, the Central Tibetan Administration declared a Year of Compassion. This initiative honors his life and efforts, while also inspiring acts of compassion, spotlighting Tibet's enduring struggle for freedom, and uniting global communities around his message of peace and resilience.
