Schubert wrote the majority of his songs for amateur musicians, and yet they are performed almost exclusively by professionals today. The Winterreise Project reunites Schubert's songs with amateur performers similar to those who purchased Schubert's scores and sung his music during his lifetime.

The Winterreise Project is an experimental performance project for amateur musicians that took place in Victoria, Canada in Spring, 2015. A group of 27 amateur adult pianists and singer received professional-level training on weekends and evenings over a two-month period and presented a joint performance of Schubert's song cycle Winterreise (Winter Journey) at the end of the course.

Performers, Song 11: Kim Paulley (singer) is an Elementary School Teacher. Derek Smith (pianist) is an Analytical Chemist at the University of British Columbia.

Ich träumte von bunten Blumen,
So wie sie wohl blühen im Mai;
Ich träumte von grünen Wiesen,
Von lustigem Vogelgeschrei.

Und als die Hähne krähten,
Da ward mein Auge wach;
Da war es kalt und finster,
Es schrien die Raben vom Dach.

Doch an den Fensterscheiben,
Wer malte die Blätter da?
Ihr lacht wohl über den Träumer,
Der Blumen im Winter sah?

Ich träumte von Lieb und Liebe,
Von einer schönen Maid,
Von Herzen und von Küssen,
Von Wonne und Seligkeit.

Und als die Hähne kräten,
Da ward mein Herze wach;
Nun sitz ich hier alleine
Und denke dem Traume nach.

Die Augen schließ ich wieder,
Noch schlägt das Herz so warm.
Wann grünt ihr Blätter am Fenster?
Wann halt ich mein Liebchen im Arm?

11. Spring Dream

I dreamt of colourful flowers
Like those that bloom in May;
I dreamt of green meadows,
Of merry bird-calls.

And when the cocks crew,
My eyes awoke;
It was cold and dark,
The ravens shrieked from the roof.

But, on the window panes,
Who painted those leaves?
Do you ridicule the dreamer,
Who saw flowers in winter?

I dreamt of requited love,
Of a beautiful girl,
Of hearts and of kisses,
Of joy and delight.

And when the cocks crew,
My heart awoke;
Now I sit here alone,
And think about my dream.

I shut my eyes again,
My heart still beats so warmly.
When will leaves I see be green?
When will I hold her in my arms?
