Liner Notes: I’m posting this on Noel Paul Stookey’s 80th birthday, so Happy Birthday, Noel! This is dedicated to my sister Marianne, and her husband, Donald Spontarelli. I sang this at their wedding. I’ve loved this song since the first time I heard it back in 1992, when my sisters (yes, plural--they had a double wedding) asked me to perform it. Noel Paul Stookey ("Paul" of Peter, Paul and Mary) credits this song to divine inspiration. I can't argue with that. When I told Shawn, my videographer, that I wanted to do this song, he mentioned that this song had been sung at both his and his parents' weddings. So I know this song holds special meaning and is sacred ground for a lot of people. I tried to treat it with due reverence—I even wore a suit. :) I left the original arrangement intact, adding only a few harmonies that I've always heard in my head.
A big thanks to Ovation for providing the beautiful 12-string guitar (which arguably steals the show). Here's the model I'm playing: http://www.ovationguitars.com/ovation-acoustic-electric-guitars/C2059AXP-5S I put that guitar through its paces, tuning it down two whole steps (and then a little sharp) to match the key of the original (played in G, but actually in E flat). My faithful old Guild 12-string sadly wasn't up to the task (perhaps it would have had better luck with an adjustment). The intonation, particularly for the pair of unison 2nd strings, was a struggle.
Thanks again to Shawn Herbert for filming this.
Thanks to you for listening/watching, and for helping spread the music,
-Mike
