My family and I sang this piece. For those who may not be Christian this text has much historical value and we are sure that everyone can relate to what is being sung in some way, as we all have dark times in our lives. When life seems darkest, often the brightest light is right around the corner, if we have the eyes to see it. Have a blessed Lent and Easter everyone!

About the text:
The Improperia or "Reproaches" are taken from the Catholic Mass of the Presanctified on Good Friday as part of the observance of the Passion. They are a series of antiphons and responses expressing the remonstrance of Jesus Christ with His people, sung in the languages of Latin and Greek.

About the music:
The music is a combination of ancient Gregorian chant and Renaissance polyphony as set by Tomas Luis de Victoria. Our interpretation was meant to communicate various sentiments that one might have while expressing this text and music. We sought to give this music an interpretation that befits its origins.

We hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed singing it!

Lyrics:

English Translation:

O My People, what have I done unto thee? Or in what have I offended thee? Answer Me.

O My People, what have I done unto thee? Or in what have I offended thee? Answer Me.

Because I led thee out of the land of Egypt, thou hast prepared a cross for thy Saviour.

O Holy God
O Holy God
O holy, O mighty One
O holy, O mighty One
O holy, immortal One, have mercy on us
O holy, immortal One, have mercy on us

Because I led thee out through the desert in forty years, and fed thee with manna, and brought thee into a very good land, thou hast prepared a cross for thy Saviour.

O Holy God
O Holy God
O holy, O mighty One
O holy, O mighty One
O holy, immortal One, have mercy on us
O holy, immortal One, have mercy on us

What more should I have done, and did it not? Behold I have planted thee as My fairest vine, and thou has become very bitter unto Me, for thou hast quenched My thirst with vinegar, and with a lance has thou pierced thy Saviour’s side.

O Holy God
O Holy God
O holy, O mighty One
O holy, O mighty One
O holy, immortal One, have mercy on us
O holy, immortal One, have mercy on us

For thee did I scourge Egypt and its firstborn, and thou has given Me over to be scourged.

O My People, what have I done unto thee? Or in what have I offended thee? Answer Me.

With great power I lifted thee up, and thou hast hung Me upon the gibbet of the cross.

O My People, what have I done unto thee? Or in what have I offended thee? Answer Me.
