I played a Les Paul but it was probably recorded with a single coil pickup guitar like a stratocaster or telecaster. I kind of sounds like position 2 or 4 on a strat to me.
It's syncopated so you could count this as "and one and (rest) and two and (rest) and three and (rest) and four and rest." The point being, beat one is on the 2nd strum, the first down stroke.
