Description

The Last Post being Played at the first Remembrance Festival led by King Charles III.

The Last Post Bugle Call has a history that can be traced back to the 1790s. Traditionally, the Monarch's Armed Forces used it to signal the day's end in a military outpost, barracks or camp.

It would sound before the Duty Officer did his end of day tour to ensure that Soldiers were on Guard at Sentry Posts and that the other troops knew it was time for bed. As such it was perhaps the first example of sleep music!

The Last Post Song was one of several such bugle calls during the day: beginning with the Reveille in the morning. During times of war, the Last Post would also be used to mark the end of fighting.

These days, The Last Post has become associated with Remembrance Sunday, the Cenotaph, Remembrance Festival at the Royal Albert Hall, Anzac Day and many other Remembrance ceremonies around the World. It is also an essential part of any military funeral music and was played at the Queen's State Funeral, Winston Churchill's State Funeral and countless soldiers and personnel, who have made the ultimate sacrifice. The simple but poignant symbolism is that the End of Day Post is the End of Life signal too.
