In perhaps one of our favourite tracks from 'Northern Sky', we begin with a very old song collected by Aodh Ó Duibheannaigh in 1936 as part of the Main Manuscript Collection (National Folklore Collection) from Michéal Mac Grianna (then aged 84) of Rann na Feirste, who originally learned it in 1886 from Máire Ní Dhomhnaill (b.1806). Bíodh Orm Anocht was recorded on the legendary Celtic Folkweave album by Mick Hanly and Mícheál Ó Domhnaill, released in 1974. More recently, it was recorded by our dear friends and heroes T With The Maggies (2010). It contains nonsense rhymes sung in a mix of Scottish Gàidhlig and Donegal Irish. It is believed that this song originated in Scotland but had been kept within the store of songs in Rann na Feirste for generations. We sourced the lyrics from the extensive archive at Dúchas as it was a challenging one to pick up by ear alone!
We then cross into a version of the common tune Morrison’s, made popular by fiddle player James Morrison. This version is a jewel we gleaned from our great friend Maurice Bradley from Co. Derry, who played us this version in Crolly Distillery a few years ago. It has been a favourite ever since.
