Description

Charted at #1 in 1924 for five weeks selling over one million copies. "Somebody Stole My Gal" had originally been recorded in 1918 by Florence Millett but does not appear to have been a major hit until this Ted Weems recording. Recorded November 20, 1923, the Victor ledgers indicate that this recording was an audition for the band on the label. It turned out so well that it was issued a master number and released. The B-side of Victor 19212, the A-side "Covered Wagon Days" was not as big of a hit, but still managed to chart at #10 in 1924. "Somebody Stole My Gal" was the first #1 hit for Ted Weems. He would have others with "The Man from the South" in 1930 and "Heartaches" in 1947 as well as several other Top 10 hits over the years.

"Somebody Stole My Gal" also charted at #14 for Ted Lewis and His Band in 1930 and #8 Billboard Pop for Johnnie Ray in 1953 (#6 UK).

Written in 1918 by Leo Wood.

Also recorded by Jimmy Roselli, Fats Waller, Bix Beiderbecke, Count Basie, Benny Goodman, Cab Calloway and many others.
