Description
The female blue-and-white flycatcher (Cyanoptila cyanomelana) differs notably from the male in plumage. Females have grey-brown upperparts, including head and face, with blackish wings edged broadly with rufous-brown on tertials. The uppertail coverts and tail are also rufous-brown with darker outer feathers. On the underparts, the chin and throat are grey to grey-brown, featuring a distinct creamy throat patch. The breast and flanks are whitish washed with olive-grey, and the belly and vent are whitish. Females have an indistinct pale eye-ring as well. Juveniles resemble females, while young males develop blue wings, rump, and tail over time.
In contrast, males are strikingly deep cobalt blue with black on the face, throat, upper breast, and flanks, and white on the underparts, with some variations among subspecies.
This more subdued, brownish-grey coloration in females provides camouflage and is typical for many flycatcher species where the sexes have different plumages.
