Optimal body position reduces drag and increases speed. This seems obvious, but many swimmers forget this once they dive in.

Good body positioning in the water makes a swimmer more streamlined, leading to faster swimming. Streamlined swimmers swim faster. Swimmers pull with the same force, but faster swimmers create less drag by maintaining a streamlined position. By keeping streamlined, you swim faster without using more strength than the swimmer in the next lane.
