One of Decca's first attempts to crossover Jazz with Jamaican Mento. These early Jamaican Jazz style recordings are responsible for the start of the Jive era.
While the song originated in Jamaica, Sly Mongoose was first recorded by Cyril Monrose String Orchestra in 1923 (Victor 77052) and again in 1923 by Phil Madison (Victor 77115), who claimed to be the songwritter. Sam Manning, accompanied by Cole Mentor Orchestra, then recorded a vocal version in 1925 (OKeh 65008).
