Track 9 from their fifth album “There’s a Riot Goin’ On” released in 1971 copyright Epic Records. It was recorded at The Record Plant in Sausalito, California and was their first release in almost two years. The title was an answer to Marvin Gaye’s question “What’s Goin’ On?” The band’s sound changed dramatically as Sly Stone rejected his record’s company’s constant demand for hit singles and followed his heart, exploring a darker, experimental sound and developing the funk genre. His inspiration was a sense of disillusionment at his own fame, the failure of the ‘60’s counterculture and civil rights movement and the political turmoil prevalent at the time. “Family Affair” became the band’s biggest-selling single, reaching No. 1 in Canada and the U.S. and achieving Gold status in a month. Sly Stone played most of the instruments on the track and was joined by his sister Rose on vocals, Billy Preston on electric piano and Bobby Womack on rhythm guitar. The title track was four seconds of silence meant as a statement of Sly’s belief that rioting was not the answer. The album received excellent reviews and achieved Gold status soon after its release. It was certified Platinum in 2001. Excessive drug use and the pressures of stardom had begun to cause conflicts within the band. They would record two more albums before disbanding in 1975.
