Is there an introduction to a band more instantly charming than the first 30 seconds of this song? I drew Sincere Engineer's Adam Beck for Indie Drummer Collective's Secret Santa theme in December 2021, and "Overbite" was an instant candidate. Deanna manages to, like, peacefully grab you by the collar and make you listen. And that loping verse beat is also there, behind her, nodding cheerfully like, "Do what she says!" But still it was hard to choose. Adam writes there big, slick drum hooks with air drumming earworm-iness balanced perfectly with dynamic & technical nuance. So I had to ask myself some bigger questions if I want people who don't know Sincere Engineer to watch. And there are damn good reasons that this is one of Sincere Engineer's most streamed songs: it hits with immediacy; the groove, of course; the unconventional winding melodic structure; the sense of celebration....For me, though, it's mostly the short story created for the listener by hearing those first lyrics coming from that raw, unpretentious, punk as fuck female voice. You're hooked. You just want (need?) to know more. And Adam's choice to vary this unconventional but short beat so little serves this listener intrigue perfectly, letting Deanna's story lead the way. When he does change it up, it's at the top of the chord progression, brazenly refusing to put a period at the end of the sentence. This is the kind of thoughtful calculation I die for. Great work, Adam! See you at the next cult meeting?
