""Simon Peter" is the first song I ever wrote. The inspiration for it came from Wade, who had been pondering Peter's triple denial of the Savior. How could the same man who courageously defended Jesus in the face of a legion of soldiers later deny he knew the Savior in front of a mere maid? He was paralyzed by cowardice? Or was it something else? While doing a demo on this song, we were told about a talk Spencer W. Kimball had given asking similar questions (see Pete, my brother, Brigham Young University Speeches of the Year [Provo, 13 July 1971], pp 1-8). Could the Savior's statement "Thou shalt deny me" have been a commandment instead of a prophecy? Was the Lord instructing Peter what to say so that the apostle's life would be spared to lead the church? If so, his denial of Christ might have been one of the hardest things Peter ever had to do. That compelling possibility led Wade and me to write this song about one of our greatest heroes: the courageous man named Simon Peter. "
