Learning new skills can take a relatively short time, but understanding your relationship with those skills may take years.

I think the year I spent at Berklee burnt out my curiosity in working with a DAW. As an autistic artist who came in not knowing any basic theory, let alone music tech, music has always been something I must feel out on my own terms. I don’t often think of theory or technical things when I compose/improvise because it affects my flow, and I felt a similar way towards working with Logic/Ableton/Protools. Luckily, I have audio engineering friends these past few years who have helped with that side of things. No one is a one-man-band, although it is always helpful to have a working knowledge of how things work.

After leaving Berklee, becoming a music director and establishing some sort of online presence, I started reconnecting with my old self and reflecting on what music has always meant to me. Making music is meant to be pure and sacred space for oneself and others, and I realize more and more that I must preserve this kind of relationship at all costs.

Be patient with yourself as you continue to learn, and have the faith that there is a deeper meaning behind all the little things you do. 💙🎶
