Description
Scott Joplin 1916 The Chrysanthemum composed in 1904 by Scott Joplin and recorded here by Scott Joplin in 1916. Scott Joplin "The King of Ragtime" a man before his time: (c. 1867 -- April 1, 1917) : Joplin wrote 44 original ragtime pieces, one ragtime ballet, and two operas. One of his first pieces, the "Maple Leaf Rag", became ragtime's first and most influential hit, and has been recognized as the archetypal rag. Unfortunately he was not as famous as he should have been during his life and had a "tragic" end: he lost all his money in promoting his opera Treemonisha leaving him penniless and disappointed; and he developed tertiary syphilis and a resulting descent into madness and died of dementia. How did he record a hundred years ago? invented in the 1890s the pianola, player piano or reproducing piano is the first recording device for played music; the key strokes are stored in Piano Rolls, the recording medium for storing and reproducing piano music. A piano roll is a roll of paper with perforations (holes) punched in it. The position and length of the perforation determines the note played on the piano. The roll moves over a device known as the 'tracker bar', which first had 58 holes, was expanded to 65 and then was upgraded to 88 holes (generally, one for each piano key). The system is pneumatic. When a perforation passes over the hole, the note sounds. Just listen to Mr. Scott Joplin the composer and the pianist about a hundred years ago. The Band: Scott Joplin Pno.
