Description

This is the most recent concert of Sérgio Mendez and his band at the North Sea Jazz Festival.

Sérgio Santos Mendes (11 February 1941 – 5 September 2024) was a Brazilian musician.
His career took off with worldwide hits by his band Brasil '66. He released 35 albums and was known for playing bossa nova, often mixed with funk. He was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Song in 2012 as a co-writer of "Real in Rio" from the animated film Rio.

Mendes was primarily known in the United States, where his albums were recorded and where most of his touring took place. He was married to Gracinha Leporace, who performed with him from the early 1970s. Mendes collaborated with many artists, including Black Eyed Peas, with whom he re-recorded in 2006 a remake of his 1966 version of the song "Mas que nada", which was a breakthrough hit for him.

SATURDAY 09 JULY 2011 • NILE • Rotterdam Ahoy, The Netherlands

LINEUP
Sergio Mendes (vocals, keyboard); Gracinha Leporace, Katie Hampton, Rozzi Crane, H2O (vocals); Kleber Jorge Pimenta (guitar); Carlos "Yutaka" Del Rosario (keyboard); Hussain Jiffry (bass); Michael Shapiro (drums); GIBI (percussion).

ABOUT
His fiftieth anniversary in the music business needs to be celebrated. With a double CD, and of course with his presence at the North Sea Jazz Festival. The career of 70-year-old Sergio Mendes started with his collaboration with bossa nova pioneers Antonio Carlos Jobim and João Gilberto. In the five decades since then, he has played with a long list of jazz legends as well as pop stars. In his series of hit records - varying from a cover of Scarborough Fair to Mas Que Nada - he has mixed soul and funk with his bossa nova jazz pop. Although he has never really left the stage, he had a full-blown comeback when he released the hit album Timeless, working with present-day stars like The Black Eyed Peas and Erykah Badu. His "Best Of" album, released this spring, carries a title that would sum up a Mendes concert nicely: Celebration: A Musical Journey.
