Description
Golden Gate Orchestra (The California Ramblers) – Cheatin’ On Me, Fox-Trot (Yellen-Pollack) with Vocal Chorus by Vernon Dalhart, Edison 1925 (USA)
NOTE: CALIFORNIA RAMBLERS (Golden Gate Orchestra) were the East Coast dance orchestra formed in 1921 to promote new dance hits at the Vocalion recording studio. Although “Californian” by the name, the band was New York based and the name was selected purely for promotional reasons. When in 1922 the fabulous saxophonist Adrian Rollini joined the orchestra, its profile became more jazz-oriented and its arrangements enriched with many instrumental solos. In the years to come, many excellent musicians joined the bands – such as Red Nichols, the Dorsey Bros or Miff Mole – and when California Ramblers signed with the Columbia company, the modern recording technique and smooth-surfaced Columbia records managed to capture the band in full glory –especially with the advent of electrical recording era. Unfortunately, the band – similarly to many dance orchestras, which had their heyday during the Roaring Twenties – did not survive through the Great Depression and into the Big Band era of the 1930s.Their last recording is dated 1931.
Vernon DALHART (1885-3-1948) was one of the most productive and versatile figures of the early recording industry, who by chance slipped into the role of a singer of hillbilly songs and became by far the most prolific recorder of such material in the 1920s. His recordings of commercial pop hits are rare.
