THE MAN WHO "THOUGHT" ABOUT THE WAY TO PARTNER WITH THOMAS A. EDISON

Of course, "thoughts are things," very powerful things when combined with accuracy of purpose, perseverance, and an overriding desire to turn them into wealth, or other material objects. A few years ago, Edwin C. Barnes discovered the truth that men really think and get rich. His discovery did not come suddenly, but gradually appeared, beginning with a fervent desire to become a partner with the great Edison. One of the main characteristics of Barnes's wish is that it was accurate. He wanted to work with Edison, not for him. Look closely at the description of how he was turning his desire into reality, and he will have a better understanding of the principles that lead to wealth. When he first appeared in his mind, Barnes was in no position to act on that desire, or impulse of thought. Two obstacles stood in his way. He didn't know Edison, and he didn't have enough money to pay for his train ticket to Orange, New Jersey. These difficulties would have been enough to discourage most men from trying to carry out the wish. But his was no ordinary wish!


THE INVENTOR AND THE TRAMP

Barnes showed up at Edison's lab, and announced that he had gone to do business with the inventor. Speaking of his first meeting with Barnes, Edison commented years later: “He was standing before me, looking like a homeless man, but there was something in his expression that conveyed the effect that he was determined to achieve what he had set out to do. I had learned from years of experience that when a man wants something so badly that he is willing to stake his entire future on a single card to get it, he is assured of success. I gave him the opportunity he asked for, because I saw that he was determined not to give in until he was successful. Subsequent events showed that there was no error. "
It couldn't have been the young man's looks that gave her the start of him in Edison's office, since it was definitely against him. The important thing was what he thought.
Barnes failed to get his association with Edison in his first interview. He got the opportunity to work in Edison's office for a paltry salary.
Months passed. On the surface, nothing had happened that approached the coveted goal that Barnes had in mind as his
initial and precise purpose of it. But something important was happening in Barnes's thoughts. He constantly intensified his desire to become Edison's partner.
Psychologists have rightly stated that "when you are really ready for something, it shows up." Barnes was ready to partner with Edison; Furthermore, he was determined to continue like this until he got what he wanted.
He wasn't saying to himself, "Wow, there's no way. I guess I'll eventually change my mind and try a sales job. " Instead, he said to himself, "I've come here to partner with Edison, and that's what I'll do even if it takes the rest of my life." He was convinced of it! What a different story men would tell if they adopted a definite purpose, and kept that purpose until time turned it into a stubborn obsession!
Young Barnes might not have known it then, but his unshakable determination, his perseverance in standing firm in his one wish, was destined to break all obstacles, and give him the opportunity he sought.
