Description
One of the most iconic melodies of the 20th century. Nearly everyone knows the choral song "O Fortuna" because it is often used in commercials and Hollywood films. It comes from Carl Orff's 1936 cantata "Carmina Burana." Here, "O Fortuna" is performed by the Beethoven Orchestra Bonn and the Bonn Theatre Choir under the direction of Jaques Lacombe at the Opera Gala of the German AIDS Foundation at the Bonn Opera.

Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana" is the musical adaptation of selected texts dating back to the 11th to 13th centuries. The name comes from the first complete edition of the songs (“Carmina”) from the former library of the Benediktbeuern monastery (to which the adjective “Burana” refers), most of which were written in Medieval Latin. Orff chose to divide the cantata into three parts. The work is accompanied by the powerful choral chant "O Fortuna" in honor of Fortuna, the goddess of fate, who is said to determine the destiny of mankind.
