Description
I have ever experienced a wave of relief upon hearing the strains of this hymn after the 50th Psalm of Sunday Orthros as the Church prepares the faithful for Great Lent. The lyric of the hymn denotes how little we bring to the equation of repentance, always relying instead upon God to "open the gates" for us and "guide us in the path." Note, too, the vibrancy of the musical setting (Plagal 4th Byzantine) as the "bright sadness" of the Lenten Season begins.
