If you want a compact to small five-door Mini, the fully electric Aceman quasi-SUV is your only choice in the marque’s current line-up. And what will soon be the entry point to the Aceman stable is the SE which, at $61,990 list or around $67K on road, sits underneath the go-hotter John Cooper Works version. That’s serious Tesla Model Y-like money.

Underpinned by joint BMW-Great Wall electric architecture, the SE grade of Aceman packs 160kW and 330Nm of front-drive thrust, powered by a 49.2kWh battery. Performance, at a claimed 7.1sec 0-100km/h, hardly rocketship quick.

But as Chasing Cars founder Tom Baker discovers, the electric Aceman SE has a number of attributes and party tricks that will win hard-core car fans over. Not only does the pricey EV compact bring inspired design, it’s one of the most fun-filled cars not unreasonable money can currently buy.
