'Rex tua nolo munera' from the Ludus Danielis performed by Trouvère on gittern and harp. An excerpt from one of the pieces on our 'Magna Melodia: Music from the time of the Magna Carta', out Easter 2015.
This is a beautiful and haunting tune that fits well with the unearthly story that it was written for: in the original church drama, this is a song in which the prophet Daniel interprets the writing on the wall for King Belshazzar.
'Rex tua nolo munera' are the opening words and they mean 'King, I do not want your gifts. In the middle of a great feast in the King's palace in Babylon a hand had appeared from nowhere and had written on the wall the strange words Mene, Tekel and Pharsin. Daniel has been called to the King to interpret the words, which have mystified everyone. The prophet tells the King that his days are numbered (mene), that he has been weighed in the scale and found wanting (tekel) and that his kingdom will be divided amongst his enemies (Pharsin)...
