Description
NOTE: In lieu of an official video, I've edited my own from multiple sources.
There are few songs which distil the grandeur and gilded personality of Marc Bolan as well as ‘Cosmic Dancer’. From the song’s most poignant refrain “I was dancing when I was 12” which hints at a life waiting to be given the spotlight, to the track’s incandescent groove, it’s almost impossible to dislike this song. It is, quite simply, one of Bolan’s most beautiful and heartening compositions, perhaps the song where we see the most naked and vulnerable piece of Bolan’s soul.
Bolan's basic but perfectly atmospheric strum and sweet singing gets away with lyrics that anywhere else might have collapsed but sound just right here, detailing dancing "out of the womb" and "into the tomb" and all points in between.
"What's it like to be a loon/I liken it to a balloon," indeed. Bill Legend's drumming, Steve Currie's bass, and Visconti's understated but pinpoint-effective strings carry the song along as a narcotic swirl, with the addition of snaky electric guitar runs and Flo & Eddie's echoing, wordless backing at the end the final touch.
A glam folk anthem worth every note.
