Description
Louis Armstrong and the All Stars May 17 1947 the Great New York Town Hall Concert This is from the famous pilot run for the All Stars and resulted in the The Louis Armstrong Big Band being formally disolved on August 31 1947 and the creation of the All Stars Band. Maybe the greatest Jazz tune of all time and one of Satchmo's favourites, maybe everyone else too. Satchmo just keeps driving them on and on but Jack keeps him in check and Barney shows it's not only their show. Composed by WC handy published in September 1914 this was the first Blues tune to make it big in Pop music it inspired the dance step the "Foxtrot" It has been called "the jazzman's Hamlet" Handy said he had been inspired by a chance meeting with a woman on the streets of St. Louis distraught over her husband's absence. Written at a time when the tango was in vogue Handy uses a tango intro to fool the people then breaking abruptly into a low-down blues (this is where the foxtrot bit comes in). The clarinet solo with a distinctive series of rising partials was first recorded by Larry Shields on the 1921 Original Dixieland Jass Band record and many accept that Shields created the solo. The Band: Louis Armstrong, (Tp Voc); Bobby Hackett (Crt); Jack Teagarden (Tb Voc); Peanuts Hucko (Cl); Dick Cary (Pno); Bob Haggart (Bs); Sid Catlett or George Wettling (Dr).
