Description
The other day, I realized Over the Rhine’s “Ohio” record is turning 20 this month. If you’re unfamiliar with Over the Rhine, they are a husband/wife duo from Cincinnati - Karin Berquist and Linford Detwieler. Karin and Linford have been songwriting heroes of mine since the mid-90s, and their 2003 double-album, “Ohio,” will forever be a guiding example of sonic and lyrical cohesion. It’s a record that feels simultaneously adventurous and honoring of the folk, gospel, and rock traditions that shaped them.
As I lay in bed listening back to “Ohio” while drifting in and out of a sleep state the other night, the songs and memories I associate with the songs reverberated on a healing level. I woke up the next morning with an unexplainable compulsion to echo back a little fragment of what I felt. I set up a few microphones and a phone as a camera and recorded a cover of “Long Lost Brother,” the opening cut of the album’s second disc. It’s a song that captures the emotion of distance and the longing for repair in a way that makes my soul good-hurt.
After recording, I asked my friend and collaborator Daniel Bertsch to augment it with his haunting cello. I’m sharing this song with you today as a humble response to the impact of Over the Rhine on my life. Their body of work over the past 30+ years has been pure mentorship to me. The artistry that pours out of this duo has profoundly shaped the person I am and the art I create.
Happy birthday, "Ohio" and congrats @overtherhineofficial !❤️🎉
Peace and light,
Benjamin
