Description
I can’t fucking believe it.
Dave actually did it, the absolute madman! Dave—er, I keep calling him Dave, but I have no clue if that’s his actual name—sent me the files for Liquids’ “Live At Mat’s House” tape, which is something that I’ve been pining after for months and months. At this point, I just assumed that I’d never get to hear it, with the few people who actually own the tape choosing to keep their precious NWI punk tapes to themselves—at least until they decide to cheese the fuck out and sell the tape on Discogs for $30, that is. I think it goes without saying that I pretty much gave up on it. I mean, at this point, we’ve got the “Hot Liqs” LP (that’s going to be pressed and released by Not Normal by the end of the year), which features re-recordings of just about every Liquids song that’s worth hearing, so what could this “Live At Mat’s House” tape possibly have that’s worth mentioning? Big whoop, I couldn’t care less.
Well, now I’m sitting here with an egg on my face, because yesterday afternoon, some weirdo provided me with a Drive link to the recordings taken straight off of his personal copy of the tape, which was supposedly sent to him by Mark Winter (who may or may not still be playing drums in Liquids, his involvement is up in the air at this point) approximately nine months after “Dave” prodded him for a totally different CCTV tape. “Dave”, by the way, is the name I’ve taken to calling him since he introduced himself to me as “Deputy Dave”, with a picture of Dave Navarro attached to the email. Yeah, the very same Dave Navarro that you’re thinking about: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f2/Dave_Navarro_2010.jpg
The whole talk with the guy was fucking weird, at least for the first half of it. “Dave” first approached me with an email that contained a file ambiguously named “death 2”, along with an unintelligible sentence that contained the words “video duct”, “death”, and “hamburger helper”. Oh, and there was a Wikipedia link to a list of films that feature “powered exoskeletons” at the bottom too. I was reluctant to download the file, seeing that it was nothing but a random email attachment sent by a total stranger, but after seeing the words “video duct” in the email, I pieced together that it was likely recordings from that Californian Video Duct noise rock band. It totally was; I probably could’ve figured that out just by listening to it, but he literally spelled it out for me right in the email, so I can’t pretend that I have a lick of intuition. It also turns out that the “video duct/death/hamburger helper” nonsense was just the track list for their 2014 “Death EP”, which the attached file was. That’s pretty neat, considering that I’ve been wanting to post their “Anti-Human Hate” tape for a really long time now, so to have him contact me was a pleasant surprise.
But that doesn’t matter. What matters is that, after I broke down the façade a little by sending him a single emoji, he introduced himself to me as “Deputy Dave” and said that somebody on Discogs mentioned I “wanted live at mat’s”, subsequently offering to send me “da files”. First of all, nice to meet you Dave, big fan, second of all, why the hell would someone talk about me on Discogs, and third of all, fuck yes I want da files! Within an hour, Dave delivered with a rip to the entire tape, along with a scan of the cover. So, obviously, everyone needs to direct your thanks to Dave, he’s the reason why any of us are hearing this right now. I’m just a messenger boy.
