Description
(Re-upload because I wasn't happy with the audio quality the first time around. Hopefully it sounds nicer this time.)
Remember when people used to rip cassettes? Strange times.
I was sent this tape several months ago. Really cherish it, as I do the rest of Liquids' discography. But as is the case with most of their albums, the physical release came along with some extra songs/goofs recorded on the tail-end of each side. On this particular album -- released on Liquids' Bandcamp last October (https://liquids1.bandcamp.com/album/happy-halloween) --, the tape version came with some bonus tracks that brought a smile to my face. I haven't seen anything about these extra songs online, so I thought I'd share them with the world.
Mostly, I was just thrilled to see some of these songs be "officially" released in some capacity, as I had already heard them on different corners of the internet before:
-Firstly, through a bootleg tape made by the Mat Williams (the brains behind Liquids) that was aptly titled "Leftover Liqs". Big thank you to the person who originally shared that with me -- you know who you are. I don't know if I've got permission to share that particular tape so I'll refrain, but you can at least listen to some snippets of it here. Those songs include the strange beatbox cover of Liquids' "Speed", with a diseased instrumental and gremlin-esque vocals, and the proceeding Untitled tracks 1 & 2 that share a similar sickly-type feel.
-Secondly, through some really, REALLY old songs that Mat published online ages ago. He used the moniker "MW Blues" back then. These songs include "Not Your Turn" and a really frickin' cool prototype of "Dark", which takes on a stricter hardcore feel than the version that was later sculpted to fit Liquids' rock 'n' roll sound. They're much more amateurish in comparison to Mat's later works, of course, but they still make for a fun listen. I saved these particular recordings a long time ago, so I'm gonna try to post the rest of the MW Blues songs tomorrow.
The remaining tracks are new to me. I hope there's other Liquids geeks out there that can get some enjoyment out of this, because it's personally brought me a lot of happiness. I apologize for the less-than stellar fidelity here. It's been a long time since I've done this. The B-side sounds inexplicably worse than side-A, and its pretty quiet overall. I dunno. Cassettes are finicky. Just turn it up and shake some tail-feathers.
The bonus tracks are marked with an asterisk. Thank you to Larissa for sending me this tape.
