Bach componeerde deze cantate ter voltooiing van zijn tweede jaarlijkse cyclus van koraalcantates, begonnen in 1724.
De cantate is gebaseerd op de hymne in drie strofen "Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme" (1599) van Philipp Nicolai.
Bach gebruikte het middendeel van de cantate als basis voor de eerste van zijn Schübler Chorales, BWV 645.
Het is te betreuren dat Bach pas aan het eind van zijn leven het voor elkaar kreeg werken voor orgel solo in druk gepubliceerd te krijgen.

Bach composed this cantata to complete his second annual cycle of chorale cantatas, which began in 1724.
The cantata is based on the hymn in three stanzas "Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme" (1599) by Philipp Nicolai.
Bach used the central movement of the cantata as the basis for the first of his Schübler Chorales, BWV 645.

ORGEL
ABRAHAM MEERE vervaardigde in 1809 te Epe een eenklaviers instrument met aangehangen pedaal. In 1901 voegde Proper een onderpositief toe. In 1928 realiseerde N.A. van Dam een zelfstandig pneumatisch pedaal. In 1940 bouwde B. Pels & Zn. een nieuw orgel met electropneumatische kegelladen achter het oude front. Een deel van het aanwezige pijpwerk werd opnieuw gebruikt. De firma Gebr. Reil maakte in 1994 een nieuw orgel in Meere-stijl, waarbij de dispositie van het Hoofdwerk grotendeels werd hersteld naar de situatie van 1809.
Het pijpwerk voor het Bovenwerk is grotendeels afkomstig uit 1803 uit de Grote kerk te Vianen.
Ook het zelfstandig pedaal bevat enig pijpwerk van Meere, afkomstig uit Vianen.

ABRAHAM MEERE manufactured a single-keyboard instrument with an attached pedal in 1809 in Epe. In 1901, Proper added a lower positive. In 1928, N.A. van Dam an independent pneumatic pedal. In 1940 B. Pels & Zn. a new organ with electro-pneumatic windchests behind the old front. Some of the existing pipework was reused.
Gebr. In 1994, Reil made a new Meere-style organ, in which the disposition of the Hoofdwerk was largely restored to the situation of 1809.
The pipework for the Bovenwerk largely comes from 1803 from the Grote Kerk in Vianen.
The independent pedal also contains some pipework by Meere, from Vianen.

Willem van Twillert (1952) studied organ at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam with Piet Kee as his Organ professor, with whom he also studied improvisation and composition. In 1975 he began 3 years of orchestral conducting studies with Anton Kersjes. In 1976 he obtained the diploma for Church Music and in 1978 the diploma of Performing Musician cum laude, with a teaching endorsement for improvisation. A scholarship afforded him the opportunity to specialize in old music between 1978 and 1981, including studies with Gustav Leonhardt.
In 1976, van Twillert was the first Dutch organist to reach the final of the Grand Prix de Chartres in France.
As an organist, he has become a well-known performing musician both at home and abroad, thanks mainly to his concerts in the Netherlands, as well as in the U.S.A., Italy, Germany, and England
