From the liner notes:
One of the oldest songs in the classic bluegrass repertoire, “Shady Grove” first appeared in Appalachia and was passed down from generation to generation. It is a derivative of the Old English folk song “Matty Groves.” It’s only natural that James Alan Shelton would cover a song like “Shady Grove” since he was born in the mountains of Tennessee and came of age with the music of Monroe, the Stanley Brothers, Flatt & Scruggs and the Carter Family.
Shelton’s grandmother taught him to play the guitar when he was 12. In 1994, Shelton became the lead guitarist for the great Ralph Stanley’s Clinch Mountain Boys, based in the nearby Virginia hills. In addition to performing and recording with Stanley, Shelton has cut several solo albums. “Shady Grove” appears on Songs for Greta, dedicated to his wife.
