A poem by the English poet Christina Rossetti, “In the Bleak Midwinter” became a traditional Christmas carol after a setting by Gustav Holst was published in The English Hymnal in 1906. Holst’s beautiful melody serves as the foundation for this arrangement by Robert W. Smith. From a haunting single voice, a stunning climax is reached before giving way to a simple restatement. Please enjoy “In the Bleak Midwinter.”
