Ad-libs are an essential part of modern day hip-hop, both filling the gaps in songs and elevating them to sound even better. In fact, they’re so important that it's hard to imagine some rappers like Travis Scott (‘FE!N’, ‘goosebumps’, ‘SICKO MODE’), Playboi Carti (‘Timeless’, ‘RATHER LIE’, ‘EVIL J0RDAN’) and Lil Uzi Vert (‘20 Min’, ‘Just Wanna Rock’, ‘XO Tour Life’) without them.
Would the Migos’ ‘Bad and Boujee’ be as popular without ad-libs? How about Post Malone & 21 Savage’s ‘Rockstar’, how would that fair without them? Or Travis Scott’s ‘BUTTERFLY EFFECT’ for that matter?
There’s no denying that ad-libs can play a massive role in a song’s virality, and make a track unforgettable. But, would people notice if those ‘unforgettable’ ad-libs were changed? Say if I was to re-record said ad-libs with my voice, would people even spot the difference?
Well, that’s what I wanted to find out. So, I chose six rap songs to play around with, re-recorded the ad-libs in those songs and re-uploaded them to a…not-so-secret channel - ‘Musical Milkshake’.
With each track, my ad-lib changes became more and more obvious, but, at the start, they were almost impossible to notice. The first song I chose came from Yeat (‘IM YEAT’, ‘IDGAF’, ‘PUT IT ONG’), where I re-recorded three minor ad-libs. Of all the rappers on my list, Yeat’s ad-libs are the most subtle, so my renditions were equally as hidden…or at least I hoped!
Next was ‘Not Playing’ by frequent Travis Scott collaborator Playboi Carti. As one of the least streamed tracks on Carti’s ‘Whole Lotta Red’ (paling in comparison to songs like ‘Sky’, ‘ILoveYouIHateU’ and ‘Vamp Anthem’), I was hoping my changes would fly under the radar.
Following that Playboi Carti track, I turned my attention to ‘EVERY CHANCE I GET’ by DJ Khaled (‘I’m the One’, ‘GREECE’), Lil Baby (‘Drip Too Hard’, ‘BAND4BAND’) and Lil Durk (‘Laugh Now Cry Later’, ‘All My Life’). Rather than re-record any of the adlibs, I decided to add some additional ones - putting my own spin on Lil Durk’s famous ‘Man What’.
Up next was two more Playboi Carti tracks - ‘FOMDJ’ (from Carti’s ‘MUSIC’) and ‘Flatbed Freestyle’ (from ‘Die Lit’). My ad-lib changes here were the most obvious so far, and sure to attract some attention - especially when the ever-observant Carti fans were lurking in the comments section.
And, last but not least, was ‘Green & Purple’ from both Travis Scott and Playboi Carti. As promised, my ad-lib amendments here were super apparent, with my renditions of Travis Scott’s ‘It’s Lit’, ‘Alright’ and ‘Straight Up’ sticking out like a sore thumb!
Surely people would notice my terrible Travis Scott impression, if not any of the other ad-lib changes, right? Well, as always, you’ll have to watch to find out!
