For most of the original trilogy, Kenobi tries to convince Luke Skywalker to defeat and kill his father, believing Vader to be totally irrideemable. When Luke turned himself in, Obi-Wan believed that Luke was making a huge mistake. In fact, throughout Luke’s duel with Vader, Kenobi was urging Luke to kill him. Vader’s betrayal of the Empeor came to a huge surprise to Kenobi. Drawing upon Padme’s last words and Qui Gon Jinns teachings, he came to realise that his own failure to fogirve Anakin had pushed Vader further to the dark side. Filled with regret, Kenobi decided he would right this wrong by teaching Anakin the force ghost ability.
