Description

🌜🌝🌛🛌[Lyrics below] "Golden Slumbers" is a lovely lullaby, where the lyrics were known from 1599, and published in 1603, in the play "Patient Grissil", by "Henry Chettle, William Haughton and Thomas Dekker"(c. 1572-1632), London (https://archive.org/details/patientgrissillb00chetuoft/page/118/mode/2up). The poem was titled "The Song".

Later the poem was popularised with a slightly different text and a lovely melody in 1883 by Benj, Warren, New York: Hitchcock's Music Store. My source is Library of Congress (https://tile.loc.gov/storage-services/public/music/mussm-sm1883-07584/mussm-sm1883-07584.pdf).

The song was also published around 1918:31 in "The child's own music book : the largest collection of mothers' and childrens' songs, musical games and piano music ever published, covering completely all phases of child life" by Wier, Albert E. (Albert Ernest), 1879-1945 (https://archive.org/details/childsownmusicbo00wier/page/30/mode/2up).

Several years later Paul McCartney, published his own "Golden Slumbers" in the album Abbey Road.

I translated the poem into Norwegian on the 10.10.2024, with the title "Sov i gylne drømmer". You may listen here: https://youtu.be/5z_SrtuUSYQ
Another English version in a lower key: https://youtu.be/_Ec452dW3EM

Here are the words I sing:

Golden slumbers kiss your eyes,
Smiles await you when you rise.
Sleep, pretty darling*, do not cry,
And I will sing a lullaby.
Lullaby, lullaby, lullaby.

Cares you know not, therefore sleep,
While over you a watch I’ll keep.
Sleep, pretty darling, do not cry.
And I will sing a lullaby.
Lullaby x3

Lu lu lu lu, repeat 1. verse

* Dekker used the words "pretty wantons" In 1883 it was changed to "pretty darling". Other versions use "my little one" and "Rock them" as the last line, in stead of lullaby. You may find more information at: https://mainlynorfolk.info/folk/songs/goldenslumbers.html

***Norsk gjendiktning***

Sov i gylne drømmer inn!
Smilende kyss på barnekinn.
Gråt ikke mere mitt lille gull,
så skal jeg synge byssan lull.
Byssan lull x3

Uten bekymring, sov du, nå!
For jeg er her og passer på.
Gråt ikke mere mitt lille gull,
så skal jeg synge byssan lull.
Byssan lullx3
