Description

Today, we have a very special episode of Professor of Rock, and I’m going to get right into it. We lost a true musical Genius recently. But Ya know.. I’ve been thinking a lot about it. And GENIUS simply doesn't cover it. For Brian Wilson, there should be a higher word or title for him that could never be bestowed up on anyone else in music history... Only him. In my opinion, He composed the highest vibrations in popular music-period. He was a light in a sometimes very Dismal world, and his music will continue to cut through the darkest times. I’ve mentioned this before, but when I started doing interviews, I made a list of 15 legends I wanted to have a deep conversation with before I left this earth, and at the top of that list was Brian Wilson.

I am dearly grateful I was able to talk in depth with Brian several times, and I want to share some of those moments through his best songs. But first, I want to share something personal I’ve not shared on this channel. One of the moments that I hold near and dear to my heart is the first time I interviewed Brian…. Now I want to add that Brian has been my musical hero since I first heard Surfer Girl as a child. Like millions of others, I would discover Pet Sounds later on, and it would literally save me. How often does one get to express that to their hero, let alone actually meet them… so given the opportunity to interview Brian, I wrote exactly what his music has meant and I created a plaque with my personal feelings and read it to him… I’ve never shown this before, but I think it’s appropriate now…

I want to honor Brian, and what better way to do that than through his music. So today I want to share my personal top 5 greatest Brian Wilson songs with his commentary behind them, including other members of the beach boys and special legionary guests paying tribute to brian as well. At #5 I have Don’t Worry Baby Don’t worry Baby… Don’t Worry Baby was actually the B-side of I Get Around, which was the Beach Boys' 1st number one hit. Don’t Worry Baby, though, got radio play due to it’s incredible pedigree, with one of Brian’s definitive vocals, brian himself called it one of the beach boys finest records. He wrote it with Roger Christian, and it hit #24. Here’s Brian on the song:

At #4, I have a song that is straight up magical, and it is one song that has an emotional element that I don’t think even the Beatles equaled. It’s In My Room.” Written by Brian and Gary Usher from the Beach Boys' 1963 album SURFER GIRL, it was the B side to Be True to Your School. And because of it’s heartwrencing arrangement and spiritual vocal became a hit, going to number 23 Speaking of the Beatles. A little tangent here. In my opinion, the Beatles are the greatest band in history. But the Beatles had multiple geniuses and a genius producer... It took 5 to do what Brian did ALL by himself… Think about that for a minute. Here’s what Brian said about In My Room, as well as a special guest.

For me, #3 pick I’m going with a deep track. but it’s actually my personal favorite Beach Boys track ever.. Surf’s UP from the once unfinished masterpiece Smile… Smile was the album that was supposed to follow Pet sounds when the beach boys and the Beatles were in a race to create the greatest album in history. Brian broke down before it was finished, and the Beatles put out Sgt. Pepper, but I always wonder what would’ve happened to popular music had Brian finished Smile.

In at #2, I have the first song I put on a mix CD for my wife when we were dating, and it’s a song that the Beach Boys actually Dedicated to us in concert for our Anniversary...
