Description
*I first heard this beautiful tune on the CD 'Highlander's Farewell' performed by Alasdair Fraser & Natalie Haas. I love this song because it balances sadness with a bittersweet happiness, almost as if it were a dream. I began working on this arrangement shortly after the 'Stay at Home' orders (excited to have time to start my first quartet arrangement). Little did I know that this would be a poignant soundtrack for the ongoing 2020 into 2021 WINTER (in all spheres/boxes of life). Ready for this Covid Winter to Noo Awa'
I looked up the history of the song and found out that Gloomy Winter's Noo Awa' actually is an even older air by the name "Lord Balgonie's Delight" ('a very old Highland Tune') which was found in Neil Gow's Fourth Collection (1800). The title Gloomy Winter's Noo Awa' was from Scottish poet Robert Tannahill, who published lyrics to the tune around 1808.
I am grateful to Caroline McCaskey for lending me her beautiful viola and cello! Also, I have big gratitude for my teachers and mentors for guiding me through compositional theory, listening to my work & proofing it with me. Additionally, thank you to my Mama Lups for helping with the video.
