Toda menina baiana (Every bahian girl)
Composed and performed by: Gilberto Gil
Album: "Realce" from 1979
- "Bahian" is the name given to people born in Bahia, a state in the northeast of Brazil.
- It was in Bahia were portuguese first arrived at the discovering of Brazil, and Salvador was the first capital of the country. That's why in the song it is said that everything happened first in Bahia - the First Mass, for exemple, a landmark in brazilian history.
- The word "Pelourinho" has a double sense in the song. Litterally it means "pillory", a kind of whipping post, which at the time of colonial Brazil was placed at the main plazas of the cities and used to punish slaves. It can also mean the neighbourhood of "Pelourinho", the historic and cultural centre of Salvador.
