Description

Gene Autry, everyone knows him, if not by name, by his music. He's one of the most important American Artists of all time. Has a career arguably as long as Bing Crosby's. But most know him for his Christmas music. He was a great country singer that even had a few of his own bands and orchestras including The Cass County Orchestra, The Melody Ranch Gang, His String Band, and several others. But as those bands have an interesting history, so did he on his own.

Gene Autry started in early 1930 as a ARC Artist. Recording on ARC or Dimestore Labels, including labels such as Velvet-Tone, Perfect, Champion, QRS, Montgomery Ward, Melotone, Romeo, and more. He would record very frequently and each session would give out maybe 3-6 sides each. He didn't stay on one consistently until around 1932 when he would be given to mostly Perfect and Conqueror to record on. That doesn't mean that he recorded exclusively on those two, but thats where he was the most, he still had a few on Romeo, Vocalion, Okeh and others. In 1938, The ARC Would collapse, and with that he would hop across some of the surviving labels taken by Columbia such as Okeh, Vocalion, and Conqueror. He would record there until Columbia knew what to do with him.

Around 1941, Columbia would have him record mostly on Okeh and sometimes on their main label. Okeh would be where he would stay almost exclusively until 1945, in 1945 he would go over to Columbia where he would, again, record almost exclusively (and the most) for basically the rest of his career until he would retire from the music industry in 1964. Everything past then on Columbia and other labels should be considered re-releases.

He had many Hits including Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer in 1949, Back In The Saddle Again in 1939, Jingle Jangle Jingle in 1942, Be Honest With Me in 1941, The Silver Haired Mama Of Mine in 1931, Goodbye Little Darlin' Goodbye in 1940, Here Comes Santa Claus in 1947, Frosty The Snowman in 1950, and many many more.
