Franco the ReJewvenator: Episode 37, If I Were A Bell
By Frank Loesser ©1950
You don’t expect to hear about consciousness or nondualism from FtR, especially when he’s introducing a song with the lyric “If I were a bell I’d go ding dong ding dong ding.” Yet after its success in the proudly low-brow hit Musical Guys and Dolls, “If I Were A Bell” became a Miles Davis/John Coltrane specialty. So it has a history of punching above its weight.

I also recommend this excellent biography, A Most Remarkable Fella: Frank Loesser and the Guys and Dolls in His Life: A Portrait by His Daughter, Susan Loesser. She is almost as funny as her genius dad, but saner and more insightful.
