Floyd Tillman (December 8, 1914 – August 22, 2003) was an American country musician who, in the 1930s and 1940s, helped create the Western swing and honky tonk genres. Tillman was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970 and the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1984.
Tillman grew up in the cotton-mill town of Post, Texas as a sharecropper's son. One of his early jobs was with Western Union as a telegraph operator. In the early 1930s He played mandolin at local dances and eventually took up the guitar.
Tillman moved to San Antonio played lead guitar with Adolph Hofner, a Western swing bandleader, and soon developed into a songwriter and singer. He took a job with Houston pop bandleader Mack Clark in 1938 and played with Western swing groups fronted by Leon "Pappy" Selph and Cliff Bruner. He also worked with Ted Daffan, and singer and piano player Moon Mullican.

Tillman recorded as a featured vocalist with Selph's Blue Ridge Playboys in 1938, the same year Floyd scored his first major songwriting hit, "It Makes No Difference Now", giving him his own Decca recording contract. Jimmie Davis purchased the song from Floyd for $300, the rights to which he got back 28 years later.

Tillman's only No. 1 one song as a singer was "They Took the Stars Out of Heaven". It reached the top of the charts in 1944. Previously, he had reached No. 2 with "I'm Gonna Change All My Ways". His 1944 hit, "Each Night At Nine", struck a chord with lonely servicemen during World War II. Axis Sally and Tokyo Rose played it heavily to encourage desertion.

A big hit for Tillman and also for Jimmy Wakely was 1948's "I Love You So Much It Hurts". His 1949 "Slippin' Around", one of the first country western "cheating" songs, was a hit for Tillman as well as Ernest Tubb, Texas Jim Robertson and the duo of Margaret Whiting and Jimmy Wakely. Tillman had another successful song with his own answer, "I'll Never Slip Around Again", as did the Whiting-Wakely duo. He slowed down on his performing in the early 1950s, although he appeared on ABC-TV's Jubilee USA in 1958 and 1959.

Tillman's final album, recorded in 2002–2003 titled The Influence, paired him with country music artists who were influenced by his style and performing: Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Leona Williams, Dolly Parton, Justin Trevino, Ray Price, Frankie Miller, Hank Thompson, Connie Smith, Lawton Williams, Mel Tillis, Darrell McCall, Johnny Bush and George Jones. The project, released in April 2004, featured liner notes by Dr. Bill Malone, Bill Mack, Hank Thompson and Willie Nelson. It was produced by Justin Trevino (country singer) on Heart of Texas Records.

Floyd Tillman wuchs in ärmlichen Verhältnissen im ländlichen Texas auf. Bereits in jungen Jahren brachte er sich das Gitarre- und Mandolinenspielen bei. Bald hatte er gemeinsam mit seinem Bruder öffentliche Auftritte. 1933 schloss er sich Adolph Hofner's Western Swing Band an, die in San Antonio residierte. Zwei Jahre später wurde er Mitglied der Houstoner Blue Ridge Playboys. Hier setzte er erstmals eine elektrisch verstärkte Gitarre ein. Seine nächste Station war 1936 das Mack Clark Orchestra, wo er als Gitarrist, Mandolinenspieler und Sänger wirkte. In dieser Zeit verfasste er erste Songs.
1939 unterschrieb Tillman beim Decca-Label einen Schallplattenvertrag. Es dauerte bis 1944, bis ihm mit They Took The Stars Out Of Heaven der erste Nummer-1-Hit in den Folk (C&W) Charts gelang. Mit seinem Song It Makes No Difference Now war er weniger erfolgreich. Er verkaufte ihn für 300 $ an Jimmie Davis, der damit einen Hit erzielte (ebenso wie später Bob Wills und Bing Crosby). Vor allem sein eigentümlicher Gesangsstil, der bei vielen Singles keine sonderliche Rücksicht auf Tonlage und Tempo nahm, erschwerte kommerzielle Erfolge. Ein weiterer Grund war die Tatsache, dass er weiterhin in seiner texanischen Heimat lebte, und nur gelegentlich in der „Music City“ Nashville auftauchte.

Während des Zweiten Weltkriegs war er als Armee-Funker in Houston stationiert, was ihm weiterhin das Einspielen von Schallplatten ermöglichte. Nach Kriegsende wechselte er zum Columbia-Label, wo er 1946 mit dem Top-3-Hit Drivin’ Nails in My Coffin nahtlos an seine alten Erfolge anknüpfen konnte. Er war weiterhin regelmäßig in der Top-10 vertreten. Sein bekanntester Hit war 1949 Slipping Around, mit dem allerdings erneut andere erfolgreicher waren. In den 1950er Jahren wechselte er mehrfach das Label. Seine letzte Hitparadenplatzierung hatte er 1960.
1970 wurde er in die Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame aufgenommen. 1984 erhielt er die größte Auszeichnung der Country-Musik: Er wurde in die Country Music Hall of Fame gewählt. Floyd Tillman starb am 30. August 2003 im Alter von 88 Jahren.
