On the opening day / night of the San Gennaro Feast on September 14th 2023, we walk the entire feast on Mulberry Street and the surrounding side streets. The San Gennaro Feast in Little Italy is known as the Feast of all Feasts, or the Grand Finale, before the Fall arrives and the Holiday Season soon follows.
The feast features a ton of food vendors, and live music, processions, rides for the kids, and much more. Walking the feast will be very busy, and stop and go at times. The camera view will also be high for a good portion of the walk, when we get into the crowded areas.
The streets are narrow, reminding me of the narrow streets in Italy. I always feel at home when this feast arrives, due to my deep Italian roots growing up. The streets are lined with Italian Restaurants, and with all the food vendors occupying the streets. As you can imagine, there is plenty of food to go around. Many people from all over the city come to this spot once a year, and it makes for a very festive and lively event.
We will be walking at sunset. I planned it this way so you all can get both the day and night experience in one walk. Enjoy the walk and take it all in, just like you are really there! The sounds and the sights of the walk will make you feel like you are really walking there with me. If you live in NYC, please take some time to go in person. The feast runs from September 14th to the 24th. It is a fun experience, and a great place to try some of the best Italian food and pastries.
As always, Thanks for taking the walk with me!

History of San Gennaro:
===================
San Gennaro (Ianuarius) was born around 272 AD, near Benevento. The events that led to his consecration took place in the fourth century, during the persecution of Christians by Emperor Diocletian. Gennaro was the Bishop of Benevento and paid a visit to the faithful in Pozzuoli. The deacon of the place was arrested along the way by order of persecutor Dragontius and Gennaro went to visit the prisoner, but, having interceded for his release, he was arrested and sentenced to be thrown to the lions. The next day, however, due to the absence of the governor himself, or because the latter realized that the people showed sympathy for the convicted, Gennaro's punishment was suspended.
According to tradition, however, the punishment was changed because of a miracle: the lions knelt before the condemned, after a blessing made by Gennaro. Dragontius then commanded that Gennaro and his companions were to be beheaded: the sentence was executed on 19 September, 305 AD.
In Naples, Italy, the feast is celebrated as follows - The Feast of San Gennaro, the patron saint and protector of the city of Naples, is celebrated every year on September 19. During the day, the blood vials containing San Gennaro's blood, is exposed to the public and the blood contained in them becomes liquid among the prayers of the faithful. A quick liquefaction is considered a sign of good luck while its delay or failure are taken as negative omens. The event is also replicated on December 16 and the first Sunday in May.
Every year, all city officials attend the ceremony, including the mayor, the president of the province of Naples and the President of the Campania region. The celebration follows a well-defined program:
845am - opening the safe with double keys to take out the casket with the vials of the blood of San Gennaro;
900am - procession with the Cardinal and the deputation of the Chapel of the Treasure of San Gennaro;
915am - The propitiatory prayers and the homily by the Cardinal start.
Once the miracle takes place, twenty-one cannon shots are fired from Castel dell'Ovo.
